Canada’s Shapowaf progresses, Fernandez opens tennis in Miami

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov entered the third round of men’s singles at the Miami Open, while Leylah Fernandez was ousted for the third round of women’s singles in Saturday’s tennis tournament.
Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario won the victory over Argentina’s Thiago Tirante 6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3), lasting less than two hours and 25 minutes.
This is Shapowaf’s first match in the Masters 1000 after seeing each other in the first round.
Fernandez beat America’s Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 7-5.
The next opponent of Shapovalov, the 27th seed, is the third seed of the United States, Taylor Fritz, who shot down Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego to advance directly.
Shapovalov won 75% of his first-place score, winning at Tirante, but the Canadian also won Tirante in 11 doubles in that match at Hard Rock Stadium.
The Canadian had a chance to finish the game in the second set, when he led 6-3, 5-3, 40-Love, but Tirante saved three match points, forcing the decider and then bounced from the breakdown to expand the game.
The 20-year-old Krueger served during the match against Fernandez and won 32 points on Canada’s No. 19.
The 22-year-old Fernandez returned to court Saturday with doubles partner Nicole Melichar-Martinez, and the duo beat U.S. Sofia Kenin and Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok with a 6-2, 7-6 (6).
Ottawa’s second seed Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe faced China’s Xinyu Wang and Saisai Zheng in the women’s doubles match later on Saturday.
Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime is still in the fight for men’s singles. On Sunday, he met Italy’s 15th seed, Lorenzo Musetti.
