Shelton vs. Tirante, Paul vs. Etcherery

Friday’s quarterfinal lineup at the Houston ATP 250 includes Americans Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul. They are set for tournaments respectively with Thiago Agustin Tirante and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

(1) Ben Shelton vs. Thiago Agustin Tirante

Shelton’s clay court game will be put to the test when he faces Tirante in the quarterfinals of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Friday. Tirante is starting to make some noise at the ATP level – surprisingly, almost all of it comes on clay. The 24-year-old Argentine’s 2026 campaign includes a quarterfinal appearance in Rio de Janeiro, where he lost to eventual runner-up Alejandro Tabilo in three sets. Tirante finds himself in the last 8 again this week following the beating of Colton Smith (6-0, 6-3) and Mackenzie McDonald (6-2, 6-0).

While this is by no means Shelton’s favorite area, he has found some success in it. In fact, he is a former champion of this Houston tournament (2024). The ninth-ranked American, who reached the fourth round of Roland Garros last spring and pushed Carlos Alcaraz in four tight sets, outlasted Zhizhen Zhang 7-6(5), 7-6(3) on Wednesday. Not a single man broke duty. Shelton will have to improve on his debut on Friday, because holding the clay against every opponent of Tirante’s caliber seems impossible. World No. 83 is doing well in Houston, and could continue into the semis.

Pick: Tirante at 3

(6) Thomas Martin Etcheverry vs. (4) Tommy Paul

Paul also has a tough match against the Argentine on his hands in Friday’s quarterfinal. Etcheverry may not be the epitome of a clay court specialist like Tirante, but it is undoubtedly his favorite place. The world No. 31 captured his first ATP title just over a month ago in Rio de Janeiro and all three runners-up came in short order – including this event in Houston in 2023. Etcheverry picked up two dirt wins this week, defeating both Federico Agustin Gomez and Alex Bolt in three sets.

Paul and Etcheverry will be facing each other for the second time in their careers and for the second time in the last two tournaments. They recently traveled to Miami, where Paul went 6-1, 6-3. The American ended up losing a historic quarterfinal against Arthur Fils, so he struggled in Houston even if his result in Miami could have been even better. Following a bye as the fourth seed, Paul battled to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Adolfo Daniel Vallejo on Wednesday night. With Paul playing well and Etcheverry facing two unlikely opponents, the world No. 21 should move on – but it will certainly be more difficult than it was in Miami.

Pick: Paul at 3
