Canada’s Victoria Mboko advances at BNP Paribas Open

Victoria Mboko has triumphed on the US tennis schedule.

The Canadian defeated Kimberly Birrell of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California on Friday.

No. 10 seed Mboko eliminated the world No. 69 after a first-round bye.

Mboko hit seven aces, five double faults and broke serve five times in seven opportunities.

Mboko, the 10th seed, also scored 69% of her points on her first serve.

Birrell hit 2 aces, sent 4 double faults, and successfully resolved 4 of 7 break point opportunities.

Her first serve scoring rate was only 54%.

The 19-year-old Mboko has reached the finals in Adelaide and Qatar this year and reached the top 16 at the Australian Open.

Mboko will next face the winner between No. 23 seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia and Zeynep Somez of Türkiye.

On the men’s side, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime were scheduled to compete in the second round later on Friday.

Canadians Gabriel Diallo and Leila Fernandez will meet in the second round on Saturday.
