Quinn vs Opelka, Berrettini vs Mannarino

Day 1 at Indian Wells features an all-American round between Ethan Quinn and Reilly Opelka, who will face Ben Shelton. Matteo Berrettini and Adrian Mannarino are also on Wednesday’s schedule.

Reilly Opelka vs. Ethan Quinn

Quinn and Opelka will be playing each other for the first time in their careers when they clash in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday. At the age of 21, Quinn has reached as high as No. 64 in the world and currently ranks at No. 73. The former NCAA singles champion from the University of Georgia has been up and down so far in 2026, but his third-round performance at the Australian Open was particularly impressive (he lost to both Tallon Griekspoor and Hubert Hubertska straight).

Opelka heads into Indian Wells as a question mark, having not played since the Aussie Open. Surprisingly, the 6’11” American has never fared well in this tournament – with a lifetime record of 3-6. In six previous trips to the desert, where the conditions have not been favorable for him, Opelka has lost his opening game four times. Against an opponent in form, that trend is likely to continue.

Pick: Quinn at 3

Matteo Berrettini vs. Adrian Mannarino

Troubled Berrettini could really use a win as he tries to claw his way back up the rankings (currently 66th). The Italian missed the hard court game in the summer of 2025 and is off to a solid 3-3 start this season.

First up for Berrettini on Wednesday is a third match against Mannarino, who won both of their previous meetings – 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at the 2018 Australian Open and 7-5, 7-6 (5) last fall in Shanghai. Fortunately for Berrettini, conditions in Indian Wells should be good for him in this encounter. Certainly not as bad as clay in Mannarino, but not much better. As long as the Wimbledon semifinalist performs relatively well, he should have the edge in this setting.

Pick: Berrettini at 2
