Alcaraz defeats Fonseca in Miami show

Tennis’ offseason tour of the Offseason continued on Monday night in Miami, where Carlos Alcaraz beat Joao Fonseca 7-5, 2-6, 10-8. Alcaraz trailed 5-0 in the Match Timebreaker before coming back to win.
WTA Stars Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula also participated. Anisimova prevailed over another American in straight sets before Pegula and Alcaraz combined to beat Anisimova and Fonseca 10-8 in the Super-Timebkiaker.
“It was really special with Joao,” Alcaraz said after the men’s performance. “I’ve never played against him, so it was the first time.
“I almost got it, guys,” Fonseca told the crowd. “It’s a pleasure to play here. It’s fun to play against Carlos and doubles, too.”
Alcaraz finished the 2025 campaign at No. 1 in the world. The Spaniard earned a top spot at the Nitto ATP Finals, where he reached the final before falling to Jannik Sonner. At just 19 years old, Fonseca rose to No. 24 in the past positions.
“What Joao has done this year is amazing, breaking (4) top 25 in his first full year on the ATP tour,” Alcaraz said during a pre-event interview. “The question of whether he will be able to reach the top 10, the top five, the top 10 will be huge for him.
“It’s one thing to reach that position and one thing to maintain your level in the next season. I see the preservation of Joao maintaining his level or we will see in the next two years if we will see that he has important and great things ahead of him.”
