athens tennis preview, picks, and predictions: djokovic vs. census

The head-to-head series between Novak Djokovic and Alejandro Tabilo is 2-0 heading into their second meeting at the Hellenic Championship on Tuesday.

With the grace of Thabilo.

That’s right; Tabilo won both of their previous events. The left-hander from Chile pulled off two clay-court victories in the past 18 months – 6-2, 6-3 at the 2024 Rome Masters and 6-3, 6-4 at the 2024 Carlo Masters.

Tabilo missed most of the 2025 campaign due to injury, but is on track to return this fall. The world 89 was impressive in Asia, finishing runner-up to Guangzhou Clellanger before winning the ATP title in Chengdu as a single. He also advanced to the second round of Shanghai following a successful qualification. Tabilo opened in Athens on Monday with a 7-6 (7), 6-7 (6), 7-5 defeat of Adam Wapton.

Djokovic is playing for the first time since the Shanghai Masters, where he got to work before being upset by defending champion Valentin Vaperot. This is the 38-year-old Serb’s third ATP 250 of the season, having already lifted the medal in Geneva in addition to the end of the turnefing in Brisbane.

It’s hard to see Djokovic staying motivated throughout the tournament, but at least he should be looking to get a few matches under his belt before the Nitto ATP Finals. And he must be inspired to beat his opponent 0-2.

Pick: Djokovic in 3
