Canada’s Leila Fernandez advances to quarterfinals at Japan Open

OSAKA, Japan — Canada’s Leylah Fernandez defeated Hungary’s Dalma Galfi 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of the Japan Open on Wednesday.

Fernandez, the fourth seed from Laval, Que., hit one ace and three double faults in the match, but broke serve three times out of eight opportunities in the match.

Her first-server winning rate was 78%, while her opponent’s first-serve winning rate was 55%.

Galfi hit three aces and two double faults but failed to capitalize on her only break point opportunity.

Fernandez will face Slovakia’s Rebecca Slamkova in the quarter-finals.
