Canada wins Davis Cup tie with Israel in empty Halifax Stadium

Canada led Israel 3-0 in the protests and entered the 2026 Davis Cup qualifiers after leading Israel 3-0 in an empty Halifax Stadium.

Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ontario and Cleeve Harper of Calgary defeated Jordan Hasson and Ofek Shimanov 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 in their first game Saturday.

Draxl and Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo won the singles title on Friday, meaning Canada’s victory blocked Canada’s progress from the first phase of the world and entered next year’s qualifiers for next year’s Davis Cup Championship.

In the case of victory, Canada chose to replace the world’s 35th Diallo with Harper to play a singles match with Orel Kimhi. Draxl plans to play against Daniel Cukierman.

Tennis Canada called for a match earlier this week, without a spectator or media, citing local authorities and security agencies calling it security.

About 400 protesters opposing Israeli operations in Gaza held a peaceful protest in Friday’s match.
