Ivan Ivanov and Jeline Vandromme win our Open Junior Championship

NEW YORK – Jeline Vandromme and Ivan Ivanov added new trophys to their collection Saturday and captured the U.S. Open teenage boys and girls champions in a straightforward way.

Vandromme beat the Swedish qualifier 7-6 (2) 6-2 in the girls’ draw, overcame the early deficit and fought in the draw, playing the first inning on the field before speeding up to steal the second inning.

“I don’t think I can believe it yet,” said in court after the victory. “I’m very happy with my week here and I showed the level.”

The Belgian player is in a hot form in New York this year, with Hannah Klugman and Kristina Penickova ranked third on the way to the finals.

On the boys’ side, Ivanov, the champion who dominated Wimbledon boys, added another Grand Slam title to his growing list of honors. The No. 1 seed beat fellow compatriot Alexander Vasilev 7-5, 6-3, and was celebrated by numerous Bulgarian flags in an all-Mugaria match.

“The entire final of the Bulgarians and the entire Bulgarian crowd,” Ivanov smiled. “I’m glad this happened, I’m glad it was successful today.”

In the doubles, the Alena Kovackova sisters and Jana Kovackova won Vandromme and her partner Laima Vladson, while Keaton Hance and Jack Kennedy won the boys’ championship in the National Finals with Noah Johnston and Benjamin Willwerth.
