NEW YORK – Even at the age of 45, even two years after the Grand Slam tennis, Venus Williams showed some big games and strong ground sprints at the U.S. Open Monday night, losing 6-3, 2-3, 2-6, 6-1 to Karolina Muchova against Karolina Muchova in front of a supporter crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Williams is the oldest singles player since Renee Richards in 1981.
She started slowly, ceding 11 of the initial 13 points and trailing 2-0. Members of the crowd shouted, “Let’s go, Venus!” Williams led 3-2, roaring as Andrea Preti stood out as his winner and fiancé’s Andrea Preti kicked out of the seat.
But Williams broke through the second set and tied up the game.
